Amethyst is actually Quartz that has taken on a purple/violet colour and is the traditional birthstone for February. The crystal has iron impurities in it that, when irradiated, cause the violet to become dominant in the stone. The stone is also relatively hard, according to the Moh’s scale, and is therefore appropriate for jewellery and often used in a variety of settings requiring a semi precious stone. The best varieties of the gemstone typically come from mines in Siberia, Sri Lanka, and Brazil. One of the most expensive grades is known as `Deep Siberian’ and is strongly purple and commands significant prices for high quality pieces.
